LIBRARY STORAGE AND BACKUP
Know where your work lives.
Keep a useful copy of your work. Personal video bookmarks and authored collections have different storage and import rules.
01 / KNOW THE LOCATION
This browser, or your account.
Guest video bookmarks are stored in this browser on this site address. They are not automatically available in another browser, and clearing site data can remove them. Adding a video still requests metadata through the server; thumbnails load from YouTube.
Account libraries store personal bookmarks and authored collections on the server, so you can access them after signing in elsewhere. Server-stored account data is not end-to-end encrypted. Choose what personal context you keep accordingly.
Signing in opens your account library. It does not silently upload or replace browser-local bookmarks. Use the explicit browser-to-account transfer action to review and merge them; the browser records remain. Signing out returns to the separate guest library.
02 / BACK UP BOOKMARKS
Merge video records without replacing yours.
- Open your video library and choose Import / Export.
- Choose Download JSON. Keep the file somewhere you control: it includes titles, categories, tags, personal notes and saved start times.
- To import, choose the YouSave video-library JSON file, review its preview, then confirm.
Import merges by video ID. Existing videos keep their current details, notes, tags and times. Category names are matched without case differences; new categories and video assignments are merged without replacing the library.
This is a YouSave backup format. It does not import arbitrary YouTube playlists or Google Takeout data, and it contains no video files.
03 / BACK UP A COLLECTION
Restore the writing as a new Private copy.
In My collections, open an authored collection, save its changes and choose Export to download JSON. This is separate from video-library Import / Export.
Choose Import collection, select the collection JSON file, review the preview and confirm. It creates a new Private copy; it does not overwrite an existing collection or reactivate a published address. Current collection backups include authored content, appearance and manual language versions.
A collection backup is a private file you control. Publication access, saved-reader relations, notifications and analytics are not transferred as an audience. Review the imported copy and publish deliberately if you want to share it. A saved collection is a relation to someone else’s current publication, not a backup of their work.
04 / COOKIES AND BROWSER STORAGE
What YouSave stores in your browser.
Session cookie. YouSave uses yousave-session to maintain your session and keep you signed in. The session expires after 120 minutes of inactivity.
Request protection. The XSRF-TOKEN cookie helps protect requests that change data. It uses the same 120-minute lifetime.
Browser storage. Guest bookmarks, categories and library preferences can stay in this browser until you remove them or clear site data. Export your guest library first if you want to keep a copy.
Video thumbnails can load from YouTube. Following a video link takes you to YouTube, where Google’s own privacy and cookie settings apply.

GOOD TO KNOW
Frequently asked questions
Does signing in upload my browser bookmarks?
No. Transfer requires an explicit review and confirmation. The browser library and account library remain separate.
Will an import overwrite a note I already have?
Video-library import keeps the existing record for a duplicate video. Collection import creates a new Private copy instead of replacing an existing collection.
Does JSON contain the video files?
No. It contains saved video records or authored collection data. Playback still requires an available video on YouTube.
Can a collection backup restore its followers or public link?
No. An imported collection starts as a new Private copy. Saved-reader relations and publication access are not restored from the file.
